Interpretation Board Example - Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

Target Lake interpretation board - Nicebrook multimedia

The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust (LWT) is a customer of both our interpretive boards and interactive educational multimedia delivered on CD. Both were for application at the Far Ings National Nature Reserve.

The LWT had a requirement for a group of interpretive panels to complement the purchase of Target Lake - an extension of the Far Ings National Nature Reserve.

The panels were to cover the history and ecology of the area along with a separate panel with specific information on water vole and eels.

The boards were printed onto 3mm thick aluminium ply with vandal-resistant coating. This is the standard solution for most LWT interpretation boards, as they have proved to have a long life as well as being good value for money.

The LWT decided that the best solution was the direct mounting of the boards to the exterior of a new bird hide at the site, using a backer board for additional strength, rather than a lectern mount.

Interpretation Board Example - Associated British Ports

Chowder Ness interpretation board - Nicebrook multimedia

Associated British Ports (ABP) required a set of interpretation boards for display at the Chowder Ness site on the Humber estuary. New mudflats and saltmarsh at Chowder Ness were created by an estuary re-alignment scheme. The area provides compensation for the loss of mudflats resulting from the construction of ABP's Immingham outer harbour and a new terminal at Hull.

The aim of the board shown here was to aid identification of waders and give some basic ecological information for visitors to the site.

ABP decided that the best mounting solution was to use a large wooden lectern mount at two separate areas of the site.

Interactive Educational Multimedia Example - Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust

The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust had a requirement for an interactive educational multimedia resource aimed at Key Stage 1 and 2 school groups. The resource would be used both during rained-off field trips to the Far Ings National Nature Reserve and as follow-up activities for the students when back at school.

The publication has been purchased by most visiting school groups to Far Ings and has been very well-received by both teachers and students.

An upgraded Key Stage1 and 2 publication was completed in late 2008 and a Key Stage 3 and 4 version is now in development.

Some screen shots from activities in the multimedia publication are given below. More are available for review on the free multimedia sample CD.

main menu - containing:

  • TEACHERS: information for teachers regarding booking, planning, directions etc for the field trip to the National Nature Reserve
  • INFO: The history, habitats and rivers in the area around the National Nature Reserve
  • TOUR: a virtual tour around the reserve
  • ACTIVITIES: games, time travel, plants

Info

Slideshows, animation, quizzes and text covering the history, habitats and rivers in the area around the National Nature Reserve. This example shows an animation developed to show reedbed succession to woodland, an effect that would occur at Far Ings without management.

Tour

A virtual tour around the reserve, with several viewpoints, each in a different habitat, with wildlife unique to that habitat. Clicking upon a viewpoint gives a view which can be panned left and right, with hidden wildlife to be discovered.

Activities

A selection of activities, some of which cover Keystage 1 and 2 National Curriculum targets. Just two of the activities are outlined below.

Spyglass

The Far Ings National Nature Reserve comprises worked-out brick and cement pits along the Humber bank. The area lies near high ground on the River Humber which allowed easy access to the River in prehistoric times. The activity named 'Spyglass' allows the user to time-travel and discover how the surrounding area looked throughout selected points in history. Landscapes, people and industry can be compared 'then and now'.

Note that key stage 1 and 2 activities were differentiated. Most key stage 1 activities included an option for auto narration. This advanced narration software highlights each word in the text as the narration proceeds. This was particularly well-received by teachers of key stage 1 pupils.
